Robin, Scilla, and a Little Spangled Shoe

Spring will come again!  So says a red breasted Robin among cobalt blue scilla, or squill, as we call them here in Maine.  I saw this Robin amongst wild scilla, or squill as we call it in Maine, on a walk in the Spring of 2020.  The rusty red of the American Robin’s breast and the cobalt blue of the squill combined in heartbreakingly beautiful way.  I knew I wanted to paint that cocky, insouciant little bird in in the Spring wildflowers immediately – although I felt the painting needed something more…Then, as I wandered around with my camera and sketchpad in preparation for the painting, I found the little sequined slipper.  It had obviously been under the snow all winter, and now lay abandoned and part of the landscape.  I took it home with me and put it in my robin’s world.

Spring in Maine

Spring in Maine is so very slow…we spend a long time looking for the tiny signs amidst the dusty brown leaves of seasons gone by.  The Scilla bloom quite early, and are naturalized in large swathes in fields and wood sides.  It’s always as if a piece of the sky has put itself in reach, maybe to be picked and brought home.  Last years we had so very many robins.  They were everywhere!  And they reminded us that though the world is dangerous, we can be like the Robin, beautiful, merry and brave.
