Robin, Scilla, and a Little Sequined Shoe

On a walk in April as the Scilla (or Squill, as we call it in Maine) bloomed, right after the crocus I saw so many Robins out, hopping with their curiously predatory gate amongst the mosses and new shoots of grass. The contrast of their rust red breasts with the beautiful blue of the Squill was just glorious. Then on the same walk I found a tiny shoe…must have been there all winter, because it was definitely still too cold for a child to be out wearing it now. It was covered in gold sequins, a little the worse for wear and snow. I knew it was the thing my robin painting needed. I painted the scene in a circle set in a square of sky and clouds and red maple buds. SOLD to private collector.

It’s painted in Acrylic on 12 x 12 box board, which I love for these small jewel pieces. I can make extra miniature paintings on the sides to just kind of expand on my feelings about the painting….like the panels shown below..

..

I call the miniature painting on this side panel “Eggs like Planets.”
