A portrait is a special kind of painting in that a perfect likeness to a specific person becomes more paramount in an artist’s delicate balancing act between reality and art. But!
A perfect likeness is not enough.
Not nearly enough. The artist must also try to reveal that person’s inner truth. Some very important thing or things that makes that person unique, without which a completely different and perhaps lesser person would walk the earth. Even a very formal portrait must have this essential spark. And it must also be an object of beauty. I think it may be my favorite painting challenge.
