Barn Owl in a Door to Twilight – Mural

Fantasy Mural

This mural may be seen on Central Street in Hallowell, Maine, on your right as you go up the steep hill. The lovely couple who own the yellow house wanted something unusual for the peak of their house and they chose this idea of barn owl perching in a window to another dimension showing a twilight sky. A Luna Moth has already come through the portal. A sun and moon and rounded clouds add a folk art dimension to the mural.

Technical Details

This mural was painted in Golden Acrylics specially formulated for outdoor murals. It’s painted on polytab and applied to the front peak of the house with Golden Mural adhesive, a clear acrylic polymer. It’s protected by a barrier layer of more clear acrylic outdoor varnish. This technique was developed by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program. I was lucky in that the owners were having their house painted at the same time and the painters very kindly allowed me to use their scaffolding, since the peak was quite high!

A Mural for Your Home

I have done murals both indoors and out. When someone decides they want a mural, sometimes they have a very clear idea of a subject that interests them, sometimes just a feeling they’d like to incorporate. Usually I start by making pencil drawings of different themes, or the same theme showed in different ways. Together we narrow it down to a final choice, sometimes with more drawings. Then I take measurements and design the final piece….Then it’s time to paint. I paint the piece on polytab and then apply it to the wall with the appropriate adhesive. It’s a magical moment when my work becomes a true part of a room, perhaps to stay there for generations. If you are interested in a mural, contact me here.
