Heat Wave

Woman in vintage clothing, hawk and a sky filled with orange sparks of heat. Painting by Jen Greta Cart.

One Day in August

We had almost a week in the summer of 2024 where the temperatures climbed to the nineties here in Hallowell, Maine. That’s unusual for us. Things began to take on a surreal shimmer as life in our mostly un- airconditioned houses and workspaces slowed down to essentials. Except for me, who was crazy enough to walk in the middle of the day…I was up above the town near High Street, when I saw a tree that bent as if in high wind, even though there were only eddies of tiny tornadoes of heat. As I looked at the tree and realized I might be close to hallucinating with heat stroke, I either saw or imagined a hawk taking flight in a sky filled with sparks of orange heat. Here is my expression of that moment.
