The Story
“Parliament of Owls” was inspired by a Camden gallery director’s tale of an evening when the woods around his house were filled with the calls of many owls. At first I wanted to go and see the the actual place…but then my dream brain inner self became inundated with images and feelings about this mysterious event. I began to see the owls and their calls and their relationships as equally material and spirit. As if their voices magically produced the forest colors around them. As if they were both animal and a real parliament that made decisions and laws. The shape above the head of the Barn Owl perched as a weathervane could almost be a Napoleonic hat, perhaps denoting some form of authority….The large Horned Owl in the upper right corner has wings and claws that are the colors of sky and fall. The garden in the lower right corner is ghostly pale, unimportant to the creatures whose world is so big and free. A couple of the owls are shadowy, almost not there at all, incidentally that is almost all we usually get to see of them…just a shadow…not even a riffle of feathers, they fly so silently.
Dimensions etc.
The painting is Acrylic on Canvas, 30×24″ and framed in a fairly narrow old gold frame with just a very quiet hint of powdery teal that brings out its mysterious depths.
